Certain people enter our lives and, briefly or over time, leave an imprint that lasts! These past few years have seen significant losses for me and I would like to honor – in images from paintings, poems and prose - memories of the following lives:

BAILEY JILL REYNOLDS (Boman Family Angel) JAN 9, 2007 – MAY 1, 2008
This painting is titled Heart and Faith of White Sands, Jan 9, 2007

My great-niece, Bailey Jill Reynolds was born in Fort Worth, TX with severe congenital heart problems. At only 6 days of age, she underwent the first of three surgical procedures - each increasingly complex and difficult.  That January, I joined other family members & friends in prayers for her.  As I walked the White Sands National Monument in prayer & meditation, I came across a hillock where a heart and a cross had been drawn in the sands.  Two large yucca plants with a smaller one nestled between stood guard nearby, reminding me of Bailey and her two loving parents, Amy & Keith Reynolds. Impulsively, I knelt and added Bailey Jill’s name arched over these two symbols of love and faith.

Feeling the presence of God in that natural sacred space of shifting sands, I felt that Bailey would have success with her surgeries.  Indeed, in December 2007, her 13-hour third major surgery was an absolute miracle, restoring her full breathing & heartbeat! After lying in recovery in the NICU with her chest cavity open for three days, Bailey gradually regained her health & strength: “What a strong woman she will grow up to be!” We blessed the Lord, the medical staff at Cook Children’s Hospital, all the people who sent loving prayers, and Bailey was home for Christmas with sisters Kaegan & Ashlynn!

Heading Home May 1, 2008

Sometimes, a special child comes into our lives to teach us once again the power of unconditional love.  Bailey Jill Reynolds in her short life touched all of us with her cheery smile and winning ways.  Her loving heart was not designed for earthly living, however, and on May Day (leaving the body that had become a burden) her heart rose in a light stream above the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex skyline.  As cloudy skies parted, revealing an evening star, her golden heart took wings.  Our blessings go with her as she returns to her heavenly home …on starry nights, perhaps we may still see her twinkling smile in the skies above .  (On the morning that I learned of Bailey’s passing, I awoke to find a small gold heart-shaped leaf on my patio and two tiny feathers at the end of the drive – and this image was formed.)

Feeling that I might resent
Having a step-father

Transplanted these two yellow primroses
From the English meadow

Settled them with loving hands
Into the rocky crevices of
A rugged Maine terrain.
